Steve Chalke on Christianity & Certitude

I'm reading "The Lost Message of Jesus" having picked it up at the GB bookstore.

His focus is on God's grace and tenacious belief in us (as contrasted to the typical), so no wonder conservative evangelicals and fundamentalists are up in arms.

Relative to last Tuesday night's discussion on "Messy Ministry" by Darlene, I found the following bit interesting. This was in reference to John Diamond's series of columns while he was dying of cancer. Lots of Christians wrote Diamond, concerned about his status with God, some even implying that he was responsible for his condition. A christian friend of Chalke's, highly embarrassed at this, wrote Diamond ending his letter with:

"Well, that's my story, John. If you ever want to tell me yours I'd love to meet you and have a chat. I really think you could help me in my journey and so I'd love to talk to you about your insights."
...
Diamond wrote back to him. He thanked him for his letter and how much he appreciated hearing his story. "The problem I have with Christians," he added, "is that they are so often peddlers of certainty. You are the only Christian in the entirety of my life who has ever told me that they thought they could learn something from me."
